Indicator Function

The indicator function (sometimes called the characteristic function) of a set $A$ is defined by

$$1_A(x)=\{\begin{array}{l}1,\text{ if }x\in A\\ 0,\text{ if }x\notin A\end{array}.$$

The measure of the indicator function of a set corresponds with the measure of that set.
